Spirited Offerings

The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated with greater aplomb by the Chinese community in the northern island of Penang than in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

The festival is not only significant culturally, but socially and economically. Neigbourhoods and businesses pool money and manpower to organize prayers and purchase or make the necessary offerings to appease the spirits of their ancestors and other wandering ghosts in the hopes of avoiding bad luck.
